Preserving the text

Every ayah in the reader preserves the source characters. At the beginning of most surahs, Tanzil includes the basmalah in the first ayah’s text; we display that prefix on its own line while preserving the original text. In Al-Faatiha it remains ayah 1, and At-Tawba has no opening basmalah.

Arabic text is selectable Unicode, displayed right to left. Surah names and verse counts come from Tanzil Quran metadata (© 2008–2009 Tanzil.info, marked CC-BY in the original XML). Original metadata.

English translation of the meanings

The English text is by Marmaduke Pickthall, whose translation was first published in 1930 as The Meaning of the Glorious Koran. The original published translation is public domain in the USA and outside the usual UK life-plus-70-year copyright term (Pickthall died in 1936). We distribute the translation without digital-library branding. This is a translation of the meanings, credited to its translator.

The source says that Irfan Ali re-proofed and corrected the digital transcription against paper copies. We have retained its English wording and punctuation, reflowing line breaks and spacing for screen display. This is not a certified facsimile of a particular 1930 printing. Four malformed verse labels in the digital source were corrected: 0.033 → 17:33; 039.04 → 39:46; 04.032 → 45:32; 05.026 → 56:26. All 6,236 references are checked against the Arabic surah and ayah sequence.

Where the Arabic source includes an opening basmalah before ayah 1, its English meaning is shown separately using Pickthall’s translation of 1:1. It is not counted as an additional ayah.

Read aloud

Arabic recitation is by Ibrahim Al-Akdar, in the Hafs an Asim narration, streamed from MP3Quran. The provider’s published reuse policy explicitly permits visitors and developers to copy its materials or use its links. We use the original audio links, with the reciter and provider credited. This is permitted reuse, rather than a claim that the recordings are public domain. Catalogue and permission details.

English read aloud uses an available browser or device voice to speak Pickthall’s public-domain translation. It is a synthetic reading of the English meanings. Voice availability and pronunciation vary by device. We prefer an English voice that runs locally when available; some browser voices use a platform speech service. No recorded third-party English audiobook is included or redistributed.

Playback starts only when you press Play. Arabic streaming connects your device to MP3Quran’s audio host, which may receive standard connection information such as your IP address. Changing surah or audio language stops playback.

Your reading preferences

Text size, theme, English translation visibility, and reading position are stored in your browser on this device. No account is needed. This version has no analytics or tracking scripts.

Use the English translation switch in the reader to show or hide Pickthall’s text. Your choice is remembered. The theme defaults to Auto: dark from 8pm until 7am, and light during the day, using your device’s local clock. It updates while the page is open and when you return to it. Choose Light or Dark to keep that appearance at all hours, or select Auto again to follow night hours.
