02How letters join

Most letters change shape depending on their position and neighbours. These are shapes of the same letter, not separate letters.

The letter bā’ in different positions
AloneمنفصلًاAt the beginningفي البدايةIn the middleفي الوسطAt the endفي النهاية

These six letters can join to the letter before them, on their right, but not to the next letter on their left. This creates a small break inside a word.

03Short vowels and longer sounds

Small marks above or below a letter guide the vowel sound. They are common in beginner texts and the Quran, and are often omitted in everyday writing.
